Several community announcements and public comments highlighted recent and upcoming events in Mitchell.
Jessica Picket of the Dakota Riptide Swim Team told the council the recent 13-and-over swim meet brought more than 280 athletes and families to Mitchell, produced 48 meet/state records and provided a tourism boost for hotels and restaurants. “We had over 280 athletes and their families from around the entire state,” Picket said, and she thanked the recreation center staff, Dakota Wesleyan volunteers, Gertie Bell School and Corn Palace staff for support.
Dave Sitzma of the Corn Palace announced the venue will host opening rounds of the NIA women’s national tournament on March 13–14 and thanked local partners including Dakota Wesleyan for assistance with the application and event planning.
A local promoter associated with Bucleman Associates spoke about the Indie Country Fest Your Town Tour stop at the Corn Palace on April 11 featuring frontmen from several country acts and noted support from the Sports and Events Authority and Mayor Jordan Hansen’s promotional help.
Councilmembers and staff noted these events support local hotels and restaurants and encourage community turnout. No formal actions were required on these items; they were taken as informational public comments and announcements.
