Valley County commissioners on March 2 appointed Gabby Knapp as county clerk to fill the remainder of Doug Miller’s term and to provide continuity for an imminent May election.
Knapp, who has worked for Valley County for 12 years and has served as chief deputy in the clerk’s office, told commissioners she has experience with court operations, elections, budgeting and the county’s financial system. Commissioners questioned candidates on management style, familiarity with the county’s finance software transition (Tyler) and readiness to take a lead role during the election cycle. Knapp said she would run in the May election whether or not she was appointed.
The board interviewed an additional applicant, Carrie Potter, who described private‑sector financial experience and community service but acknowledged limited direct court or county clerk experience. Commissioners said they appreciated both applications but prioritized continuity for the coming election window.
Following deliberation the board voted to appoint Knapp. She was sworn in, took the oath of office and posed for photographs. Commissioners directed administrative staff to update signature authorities and to support the clerk’s office through the short transition window.
Knapp said she plans to remain involved in the county’s strategic planning and to ensure staff and systems are supported during the election. The May election schedule requires staff and the clerk’s office to finalize ballot layout and logistics over the coming weeks.
