Emergency sewer repair to start after $673,000 Commerce grant cuts city share to under $100,000

City staff told the Aine City Council on June 12 that emergency repairs to a failing sewer line at Wharf River Crossing (station four) will begin immediately after materials are delivered.
The council was briefed that initial planning estimated the job at about $1 million. After applying for emergency Commerce funding the project estimate stands at roughly $840,000; staff said they secured a $673,000 Commerce grant. The remaining funds will come from a grant/loan package with a principal component that is 50% forgivable, a financing approach that staff said reduces the city’s direct cash obligation to less than $100,000.
Officials advised the council that pipe would be delivered on the coming Friday and construction would start the following Monday. Staff warned of traffic impacts on F Street near the work zone and a significant excavation in Zasco Park for directional boring.
City staff credited the timing and outreach of the city engineer for helping identify available Commerce funding. The council was told the emergency designation allowed the city to accelerate work needed to avoid wastewater discharges.
The city will proceed with construction under emergency authority and will continue to update the council on schedule, funding documentation and expected traffic and park impacts.
