Macomb council sets Aug. 18 public hearing on business development district proposal

Alderman Dave Dorset told the council the district ‘‘would not take away from any particular pot of money’’ and could add another funding source to support projects such as pedestrian-safety improvements and incentives for new businesses on Jackson Street and other downtown areas. He said the district could help capture momentum in corridors that include East and West Jackson, the downtown square and the business park.
When members asked what types of transactions would be exempt from any district tax, Alderman Dorset said the proposed tax would not apply to untitled vehicles, implements of husbandry, prescription medicine, or groceries. The council did not finalize the district boundary at this meeting; aldermen said the exact area will be refined over the summer as staff develops options.
The item had its first reading at last week’s council meeting and was advanced for a second reading and a public hearing date at the next council meeting. The council emphasized this step begins a process that will include public input at the August hearing.
