Macomb council authorizes Teamsters contract that phases in single salary schedule

The Macomb City Council on a roll-call vote authorized execution of a collective bargaining agreement with Teamsters Local Number 627, approving a multi-year pay and classification update for represented city workers.

City negotiator Miss Scalf said the agreement ‘‘phases out the current matrix and gets to a single salary schedule for each position’’ over the next three years, with entry-level hires placed at 80% of scale, moving to 90% after one year and to 100% after three years. The contract also includes retroactive longevity steps (with no back pay), the creation of a lead operator III classification to provide operational flexibility, and a 4% salary adjustment in each of the next three years.

The changes were described by staff as intended to simplify salary progression and provide more predictable increases for represented positions. Miss Scalf summarized other negotiated points and told the council the parties believe the agreement is a ‘‘good resolution’’ after multiple bargaining sessions.

Council moved and seconded the motion to authorize the agreement and adopted it by roll call; the clerk recorded affirmative votes from the members present. The mayor will not execute the contract until staff confirms the union has signed the agreement, as the mayor’s office said it typically waits for the other party to execute first.

The agreement will be implemented according to the timelines in the negotiated language once both parties have signed. No further financial details beyond the scheduled percentage adjustments and classification changes were provided in the meeting packet or on the record.
