The City of Southfield Planning Commission on Oct. 29 recommended that City Council approve a special land use allowing Worldwide Equipment Sales of Michigan to operate a tow-truck dealership at 21380 Telegraph Road.
Planning staff said the property is split-zoned—the front portion I1 industrial and the rear used for parking—and that the proposal does not change the building or pavement footprint. The petitioner proposes hours of operation Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Staff outlined site improvements including restriping, ADA parking, a walkway from the sidewalk to the front entrance, bike racks, repairs to failing pavement and additional landscaping adjacent to residential property on the east.
Marty Raka, who identified himself as the general manager of Worldwide Equipment Sales of Michigan, told the commission the business is prepared to make required changes and move into Southfield as soon as approvals allow.
Planning staff recommended a favorable recommendation to council contingent on administrative site-plan approval by the city planner, continuous compliance with applicable ordinances, permits and final inspections. The commission voted in favor of the recommendation; the item is scheduled for City Council introduction on Nov. 10 and a public hearing and final action Nov. 24, after which the planning department will complete final site-plan review and inspections.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing.
The commission’s action was a recommendation only; final approval and any conditions will be set by City Council and through the city’s administrative site-plan and permitting processes.
