Student safety report lists two investigations and four restraints; board accepts two teacher retirements

At the start of the Feb. 18 meeting a presenter delivered the student safety data system report covering September through December. The presenter said the district recorded two investigations (one confirmed and one not confirmed), no incidents that led to removal for other incidents, and four incidents recorded as student restraints during that period.

A board member asked whether “restraints” meant physical holds or simply separating a student from the class. The presenter clarified the district codes those incidents as restraints for reporting purposes but described them as safety separations handled by trained staff and explicitly said the district does not use handcuffs or law-enforcement restraints.

The board moved on to curriculum and personnel items later in the meeting. The curriculum committee sought approval for three spring field trips (kindergarten, third grade and fourth grade) and a free April presentation by an animal shelter (insurance certificate to be updated if animals attend). The board accepted the retirements of Maria Garrison and Michael McCardy effective July 1 and approved a slate of tutors.

Superintendent report: the superintendent said January enrollment remained unchanged at 269 students year-over-year and noted accompanying safety drill, suspension and anti-bullying reports. The superintendent also announced the board will recognize former student Xander Stman for earning Eagle Scout; the presenter summarized his scouting milestones and community service projects.

Next steps: committees will provide updated policy paperwork next month where items were tabled, and the board will track required insurance certificates for outside presenters before any animals are brought onsite.
