Board approves multiple proclamations, food‑safety contract and bond work; seeks more detail on interpreting costs

At its April 9 meeting the Burbank Unified School District Board of Education approved a series of routine and bond-related items, including ceremonial proclamations and professional‑services agreements.
The board unanimously adopted Resolution 31 designating April 24, 2026, as the district’s Day of Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide (1915–1923). Trustees also approved Resolution 32 (Day of the Teacher and Teacher Appreciation Week), Resolution 33 (School Lunch Hero Day, May 1), Resolution 34 (School Nurse Day, May 6) and Resolution 35 (Substitute Teacher Appreciation Week). Each proclamation passed by voice vote.
On operational contracts, staff presented an agreement with Ecolab’s EcoSure unit for annual food-safety assessment services priced at $22,644, funded from the district’s nutrition fund. Trustees asked about an automatic‑renewal clause and a possible cap on any annual increases; staff said they would check and negotiate if needed.
The board approved Measure ABC bond‑funded professional services for a pool storage and shade structure at Burbank High School. Staff described the role of the firm — finalizing DSA approval, supporting bidding, construction administration and close‑out — and estimated the professional fee in the tens of thousands (professional services estimate cited). Trustees sought clarification about reimbursable costs and DSA timelines.
Also approved were amendments to roofing contracts to upgrade materials to a 40‑year warranty for summer 2026 projects; staff said the changes remain within current bond allocations and that a fuller bond-expenditure update will be provided at a later meeting.
During consent items the board approved an increased purchase order for Alpha Interpreting Agency to cover sign-language interpreters and other interpreting needs across students, staff and family events. Several trustees asked staff for a breakout of the rising costs — which board members observed have grown substantially this year — and requested a report on whether some services could be shifted in‑house to reduce agency spending. Staff said they are reviewing current year actuals and will provide a detailed budget outlook in forthcoming budget and PO review sessions.
Other approved items included a change order to furnish auditorium chairs at Roosevelt Elementary (gift-funded) after an unexpected flooring delay. The meeting concluded with reports and no additional formal votes.
