Jury approves one-year Live Oak disposal agreement, citing higher rates and reduced leachate risk

The DeSoto Parish Solid Waste Committee approved a one-year disposal agreement with Live Oak that goes into effect June 1. Committee members said the new contract contains no marketing fees, pays a higher rate for municipal solid waste than the prior contract, and is structured year-to-year so the parish can exit quickly if performance is unsatisfactory.
Committee members and staff said Live Oak has already begun returning more preparatory (drier) material that passes paint-filter tests, which should reduce leachate problems in future landfill cells. The landfill manager who assisted with the agreement said the prep material is “a lot drier” and that the county should see fewer leachate issues over time.
Jurors said the new contract should increase gas production and revenue; staff emphasized that the agreement had been reviewed by attorneys and that there is no added cost for oversight beyond existing engineering assistance. Because the contract is one year, jurors said they retain flexibility if future tonnage or pricing proves unfavorable.
