Kent council adopts ordinance narrowing term limits to land‑use and DEIB boards

The Kent City Council on April 7 adopted Ordinance 4537, amending city code to limit the application of term limits for appointed boards and commissions to only the Land Use & Planning Board and the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) board.
City Attorney Tammy White told the council the ordinance removes term limits from most advisory groups while preserving existing limits for the two boards that already have them. Under current code, Land Use & Planning Board members serve three‑year terms and may serve two consecutive terms (a six‑year maximum). The DEIB board’s code limits members to two‑year appointments for up to three terms (also a six‑year maximum); the ordinance preserves that six‑year cap for both boards while eliminating the limit for others.
White said the ordinance also extracts the term‑limit language into its own code section to make future amendments easier, rather than requiring edits to a larger multi‑subsection article. Council President Core moved adoption of ordinance 4537; the motion carried on a voice vote.
The ordinance takes effect according to the city’s usual ordinance timetable unless otherwise specified by the code or future council action.
