The Granite City CUSD 9 Board of Education authorized the purchase of 540 Chromebooks using CARES Act digital relief grant funds to replace devices identified as at the end of their useful life.
Board members were told the purchase is fully covered by grant money and intended to replace older student devices distributed during the pandemic. Director of Information Systems Brad Fred Urbay said supply-chain delays could mean devices take "8 to 16 weeks to arrive after the order is placed." The administration presented multiple vendor quotes; the packet listed quotes from several suppliers and identified CDWG as the selected vendor in the recommendation.
Board members asked whether the posting of job openings should include salary ranges in other parts of the meeting; on the Chromebook item the administration reiterated these devices would come from grant funds and therefore not draw on district operating money. The motion to approve the Chromebook purchase was moved, seconded and passed by roll call.
The district will use the devices to replace Chromebooks that have reached the end of their useful life and to ensure every student eligible for remote instruction has a functioning device while the district monitors distribution and device performance.
