Board approves hires, extracurricular appointments and a calendar adjustment

The Granite City CUSD 9 Board of Education approved a range of routine personnel and calendar items during its regular meeting.
Under recommendations from administrators, the board approved several leaves of absence for district employees (names and effective dates were read into the record). Administrators also presented extracurricular and staffing recommendations: Terry Coz was recommended for a science-department role at Kulage Junior High, Amy Heath was recommended as secondary honors coordinator at Granite City High School, and Emily Hensley was recommended for a sixth-grade special-education teacher position at Griggsby Intermediate School; the board approved each recommendation by roll call. The board also approved Kelsey Moo for a life-skills teaching position at Kulage Junior High School and approved a list of certified and classified substitutes including Elizabeth Boyd, Lauren Russio and Brienne Towner.
On an item carried over from a prior meeting, the board approved a change to the 2020–21 school calendar. Because requirements for student attendance mandated 17 of 76 days, the district added an attendance day: the board changed CASM Pilaski Day (Monday, March 1) to an attendance day; Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 3) remains a nonattendance day for students and staff.
Board members approved the consent agenda, which included the personnel and calendar items; the approvals were recorded via roll call. The meeting record shows board members thanked staff and volunteers for a district service event in which roughly 250 pairs of shoes, masks and socks were packed for K–6 students and for students experiencing homelessness.
