The Board of Supervisors approved a new Yuba Wildlife Program policy that establishes a process for allocating county Fish and Game fines and deer mitigation funds through a grant-style program rather than reviving the county Fish and Game Commission.
Assistant County Administrator Sean Powers said the policy includes eligibility, allowable uses and an application process that mirrors aspects of the county’s existing discretionary funds policies and includes the ability to bring special requests to the board outside the budget cycle. "This is kind of where the future is going for what used to be the Fish and Game Commission and how funds would be allocated to support fish and game and outdoor activities," Powers said.
Stakeholders urged the board to prioritize youth hunts and public involvement; Dale Whitmore and Greg Childs both supported restarting youth programs and involving local 501(c)(3) organizations to administer projects. The board moved and approved the policy by voice vote.
Powers and speakers said the county would supervise use of funds consistent with Fish and Game Code restrictions and tie awards into the annual budget process.
