Probation officer showcases detection dog 'Tractor' and school outreach

Ryan Landis, Yuba County probation canine handler, briefed the Board of Supervisors on the department’s new detection program and outreach involving the dog Tractor.
Landis said he and Tractor were certified in target odors including firearms and drugs after graduating detection school in June; the team recorded 133 deployments in a six-month period that included searches at high schools, juvenile rehabilitation facilities and the county jail and led directly to four arrests. "In that month alone, we were deployed to three high schools ... Our total deployment for these six months was 133, which led directly to four arrests," Landis said.
Landis described Tractor’s friendly demeanor and how demonstrations at schools include an informational presentation followed by supervised meet-and-greet interactions so students can see the dog in a nonthreatening setting. A board member asked how schools arrange demonstrations; Landis recommended contacting the Clerk of the Board to schedule visits.
Supervisors thanked the probation team for outreach and the board recognized the department for the program’s community benefits. No formal action was required.
