Parents press Burbank Unified for clearer action after repeated threats at Jefferson Elementary

Several Jefferson Elementary parents and staff told the school board that one student has repeatedly threatened self-harm and to harm classmates, and that episodes of physical aggression have continued despite site-level interventions.

Speakers during the public comment period described incidents dating back months and recounted examples in which students were frightened, a classroom aide could not restrain the student, and the child returned to class the next day after an incident on Jan. 28. Multiple speakers said that notifications to parents were limited and described inconsistent communication from site administrators.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Macias acknowledged the family and staff concerns and said he had already emailed district staff; he pledged to host a parent meeting with district and site staff (targeted for the next Tuesday) to explain what the district knows, describe supports and next steps, and allow families to ask questions. The board also discussed preparing a safety-report and reviewing entrance security and staffing to address concerns raised across sites.

Board members and the superintendent said the district cannot discuss individual student details in a public forum but committed to hold a meeting for Jefferson parents and to coordinate communication, describing that as an immediate priority. The superintendent and board members also said they would work to assemble site-specific plans that outline how the district will maintain safety while complying with confidentiality and IEP requirements.

Next steps: The superintendent will convene a parent meeting; district staff will coordinate with the school site to provide families with additional information and a plan for how safety concerns will be managed going forward.
