Staff brief committee on roofing, HVAC, secure entries and playground safety under Measure ABC

Facilities staff updated the Measure ABC oversight committee on multiple campus projects, including roofing, HVAC assessments, secure-entry redesigns and playground safety work.

Robin (facilities presenter) told the committee that several roofing projects will be before the Board tomorrow for contract awards or material purchases and that John Burroughs and Burbank High School projects are advancing. On HVAC, staff said they will contract an engineer for a full site assessment across all 22 campuses, with about 20 days of campus walks beginning in March; two air-conditioning units ordered for Burbank High will be installed by district facilities and currently charged to the facilities budget (with possible later transfer to bond funds).

On school security, staff explained five elementary schools (including Edison, Emerson, Bret Hart, Roosevelt and Washington) lack secure entry sequences where visitors open into hallways rather than supervised offices; architects are being engaged to design secure entries and the work will require Division of the State Architect (DSA) approval, which can take 18–24 months and is why some sites are scheduled later.

Committee members raised ADA and accessibility concerns for playground upgrades, noting swings and special adaptive equipment are important for students with mobility or sensory needs; staff said they are including ADA path-of-travel and surfacing in assessments and will present site-specific recommendations and costs when reports are complete.

Staff committed to provide purchase orders/board backup (make/model and cost) for the two Burbank High HVAC units and said they will bring design presentations to the committee when designs reach an appropriate stage.
