The Yellow Springs board agreed on a two-day retreat June 26–27 that will include a morning leadership-coaching session and an afternoon legal session with Jennifer Harden, deputy director of legal services at the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA).
Board members described objectives including clarifying procedural matters, the scope of board policy, Sunshine-law scenarios and the legal purview of the board versus administration. One member suggested taping the public afternoon session for transparency but not the morning session, which may deal with more personal or internal matters.
Members also discussed inviting a mediator or neutral observer to meetings who could offer a brief debrief and recommendations to help improve meeting norms. The group agreed that the retreat should include time for debrief and goal-setting and tasked staff to secure the OSBA legal presenter and logistics for the retreat.
The board asked administrators to circulate the retreat memo and schedule by email, and to handle public notices if the retreat replaces other scheduled work sessions.
