Board approves Reveal math for middle schools after multiyear pilot and teacher committee recommendation

Covina Valley Unified's board voted to approve a middle-school math adoption recommended by a 14‑teacher committee following a multiyear review and pilot process.

Matt Dalton, director of curriculum and instruction for secondary, summarized a three‑year selection process that included paper screening, publisher presentations, summer training, field testing of three programs (Envision, Reveal, Desmos), and an extended classroom pilot. The committee used a custom rubric emphasizing conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, differentiation and supports for English learners and students with disabilities. Dalton told trustees the committee reached a unanimous recommendation for McGraw Hill Reveal for grades 6–8 after weighing pilot data and teacher feedback.

Trustees asked whether dual-language teachers (Spanish/Mandarin) were represented on the committee. Dalton said the committee consisted of middle-school math teachers, some of whom spoke Spanish and worked with English learners, but the district has no middle‑school dual‑language math teachers and therefore did not include a dedicated dual‑language math teacher on the committee.

Later in the agenda the board moved, seconded and recorded a unanimous roll-call vote to approve the Reveal adoption as presented. District staff said materials procurement has funding allocated in this year's budget and the next step will be an implementation plan and professional development for teachers prior to rollout.

The board's approval authorizes staff to proceed with purchasing materials and initiating the planned professional learning series.
