Police report: 1,258 calls in April; council worries about speeding after two fatalities

The Bulverde Police Department reported its April activity to the council, listing 1,258 calls for service, 21 violations observed, 13 arrests and 19 crashes across city roadways.
"During the month of April, we responded to 1,258 calls for service," the presenter told the council, and provided a breakdown of crash locations including FM 1863, Highway 46 and Highway 281. The department said it opened 26 investigative cases, closed 22, filed 18 cases with the district attorney and completed 60 interviews during the month.
Councilmembers pressed the department about two recent fatalities. The police representative said investigators believe speed was a factor in one of the two deaths and the other remained under investigation; in the other case, investigators believed the driver may have fallen asleep.
Members of the council expressed ongoing concern about high speeds on local roads and asked staff for ideas to reduce speeding. The department noted its traffic-enforcement efforts and the pending engineering studies the council authorized to create an evidence base for posting changes or additional signage.
