Prescribed burn at John Clyde, Negri mowing and Eagle Scout projects discussed

Franklin Township staff and volunteers updated the Trails Advisory Committee on land-management and volunteer projects at the April 8 meeting.
Tara reported that the New Jersey Forest Service conducted a prescribed burn at John Clyde Memorial Grasslands on or about April 7 but paused early because wind speeds rose; two fields were completed and the burn season ends April 30. Members said Negri Preserve had not yet been mowed and that burning there is unlikely before the April 15 window closed; they agreed to ask DPW to mow Negri as a priority to maintain habitat and prepare for planned trail and birding events.
The committee also reviewed multiple scout projects. An Eagle Scout volunteer, Stasia (and others), offered to repair or replace several kiosks (one is currently lying on the ground at Middle Bush) and to refurbish wooden interpretive signs at Negri, including the bird blind and benches. The committee estimated roughly $5,400 remained in a grant earmarked for a rain garden at Nan/Neon Williams Memorial Park and asked DPW to coordinate heavy work (digging and supply access) while scouts complete planting and finishing tasks.
Other items: members discussed trail blind benches and ramp condition at Negri’s bird blind (Chris Williams and DPW expected to address repairs), and confirmed trail-condition reporting and seasonal monitoring. The meeting closed after a motion to adjourn passed.
