Franklin trails group maps County Route 518 route, picks Negri Park for National Trails Day

Franklin Township’s Trails Advisory Committee on April 8 advanced plans to map a trail along County Route 518 and selected Negri Park as the site for its National Trails Day event on June 6.
Committee members reported multiple reconnaissance walks across the corridor and agreed to share GPS recordings (Field Maps/MyWalk or Regrid traces) so township IT can overlay routes on property lines for DPW and open-space review. Members flagged wetlands and waterlogged sections as constraints and said portions of the route will require DPW input and—where necessary—boardwalk or other minimization measures.
The committee also identified a Transco/Sun Pipeline Company easement overlapping township land (recorded overlap roughly 0.0688 acres in the file reviewed) and agreed that any trail alignment would have to preserve pipeline access. Members discussed routing trails away from nearby houses and using raised ground or existing utility corridors to reduce impacts on neighbors.
For programming, the committee chose Negri Park for National Trails Day, setting a 10 a.m. start and a birding/nature focus. The group agreed to invite Chris Williams (the local Audubon leader referenced by members) to lead a bird-focused walk and to use the township’s registration/parks system for signups. The committee emphasized parking logistics and family-friendly programming and asked staff to prepare a map and an outreach flyer.
Next steps: committee members will re-share GPS tracks to staff, IT will prepare mapped overlays for the open space advisory committee and DPW, and the committee will prepare a National Trails Day flyer and registration link for arrival by mid‑May.
