Saint Peter council approves purchase of Stryker Mako surgical robots for local hospital

Paula, speaking for the hospital, told the council the supplier’s equipment agreement would set a capital obligation of $1,693,468.95 for two Mako units and the required instrumentation, with interest raising the projected total to about $2,079,000. She said an 8.5% rebate on joint-replacement components under the agreement is expected to “cover the cost of the robot and robots,” and that the hospital does not anticipate an outlay of cash after rebates and a year-end true-up.
The request came with operational context: the hospital already owns a Mako unit purchased in 2019 and has grown clinical demand. Daryl noted the existing robot has been “responsible for over $14,000,000 in charges” in the intervening years, and Paula said multiple additional surgeons are now certified and requesting access. Paula asked the council for authority to sign a contract to purchase a single robot now and to decide within six months whether to buy a second.
Council members asked how the machine alters the surgical process and scheduling. Paula described the workflow: a CT-based, customized surgical map that constrains cutting to preplanned parameters, improving accuracy and shortening recovery. Council discussion emphasized clinical capacity, surgeon retirements and training trends among new surgeons.
By roll call the council approved the resolution authorizing purchase of the Stryker Mako robots. The resolution language and motion were taken from the packet (resolution on page 18). The council did not specify financing mechanics beyond the vendor agreement and the possible year-end true-up described by hospital staff.
The council’s next steps for the hospital request are to complete the vendor contract and proceed with equipment ordering under the terms presented.
