Board adopts resident-only parking on Oak and Hickory after petition from neighbors

The Village of New Lenox Board of Trustees on May 14 adopted an ordinance amending Section 90 of the municipal code to establish resident-only parking on portions of Oak and Hickory, citing parking and late-night disturbance concerns tied to nearby business activity.

The action followed a presentation from the mayor and comments from residents who brought a petition seeking relief. The mayor said the measures aim to protect neighborhood livability: “These are some very good residents over at Oak and Hickory,” the mayor said, noting the village had worked with residents and staff to craft the targeted restriction. Board members discussed a permit-and-plate system for enforcement; the mayor told residents the village will initially issue warnings and then, if needed, citations.

Trustee Wilson moved to set aside the rules and waive a second reading; Trustee Galuza seconded. Trustee Reiser then moved to adopt the ordinance and Trustee Galuza seconded. Roll-call votes showed trustees present and the mayor voting aye; Trustee Scalise was listed absent during roll call.

The board discussed next steps after the vote, including removal of old signs and coordination with police to monitor the new restrictions during the first days of enforcement. The mayor said crews expect to begin implementing changes within days and that enforcement will include warnings before issuing tickets.

The ordinance was adopted at the meeting; the village will follow up with residents on signage and enforcement timing.
