Prairie Woods seeks $50,000 environmental and archaeological review grant

KANDIYOHI COUNTY, Minn. — Jennifer Swenson, executive director of the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, asked the Kandiyohi County Board on Feb. 17 to approve a resolution supporting an application for up to $50,000 in environmental and archaeological review funding to the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
Swenson said Prairie Woods completed master planning last year and has been designated part of the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails system; Phase 1 priorities include a welcome-center addition to improve accessibility, parking improvements, and possible upgrades to a canoe/kayak dock and yurt area. "We're planning to apply for this environmental archaeological grant in an amount not to exceed $50,000 to help cover those early planning and assessment costs," Swenson said, adding there is no required county match and the Prairie Woods board approved a similar resolution.
Commissioners asked for timing and scope; Swenson said the Legacy funding application deadline is in July and that construction could take up to three years from funding. The board approved Resolution 2026-11 to support the grant application.
Next steps: Prairie Woods and county staff will include the resolution with the July grant application and return to the board if project-specific funding requests for construction follow the planning work.
