Board approves Voas shelter bid, accepts $7,500 wildlife grant and authorizes trails grant application

Director Curt Cable presented a package of capital and grant items April 14. The board approved a low bid from Great Southern Recreation of $38,657 for a 24x36 low‑pitch beam shelter at Voas Nature Area intended to accommodate about 60 children during programs; installation would be completed by Conservation staff. The purchase was approved contingent upon County Budget approval.
The board also accepted a Wildlife Diversity Small Management Grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in the amount of $7,500 for the Kuehn Conservation Area (KCA). Cable said the funds will help hire a Conservation Corps of Iowa crew to remove invasive woody vegetation across portions of the 778‑acre KCA.
Separately, the board approved Resolution 2026‑02 authorizing DCCB to apply for the Fiscal Year 2027 State Recreational Trails Program Grant to continue phases of Raccoon River Valley Trail rehabilitation; the resolution acknowledges DCCB's intent to provide required match funds and authorizes the Conservation Director to sign application documents. All motions carried with unanimous "aye" votes.
