Dean Technical High School awarded $1.25 million state grant; two seniors honored

A presenter from Dean Technical High School announced that the school was awarded $1,250,000 through the state's career and technical education (CTE) expansion grant initiative to modernize its electrical and metal fabrication programs and to develop a new early education and care program.
The presenter told the school committee that the funding will support relocation and modernization of the electrical and metal fabrication shops, add seats to existing programs and help create new CTE pathways. The presenter said Dean Tech will expand clean-energy construction training and has launched a union apprenticeship training program intended to connect students directly with family-sustaining careers after graduation.
"This funding helps support the relocation and modernization of our electrical program and our metal fabrication program, as well as developing a new early education and care program at Dean Tech," the presenter said. The presenter also described partnerships with Holyoke Community College for adult training programs and said Dean Tech has upgraded tools, supplies and equipment to expand hands-on learning.
The committee heard two senior recognitions. The presenter said Daniel Garcia, a programming and web student, earned a 4.27 GPA and was the only Holyoke student to earn a perfect 600 on the math MCAS; Ariel Suarez Baez was recognized as Dean Tech's outstanding vocational-technical student of the year by the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators.
Dean Tech staff announced end-of-year events including prom, class day and graduation, which the presenter said is scheduled for Thursday, June 4 at 5:30 p.m. The presenter also invited school committee members to a ribbon-cutting at Dean Tech Wednesday morning that will include a representative from AllTraits.
Committee members thanked the presenter and wished students well for the end of the school year.
Looking ahead, Dean Tech staff said the grant-funded work and apprenticeship programs will proceed in partnership with the district and local higher-education and industry partners.
