Clarke County supervisors award $75,243 bridge contract, approve road variance and employee health plan

The Clarke County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a series of measures during its May 4 meeting at the Clarke County Courthouse, including a $75,243.47 contract for a bridge replacement project, a road-variance for Ward Township property owners and a new employee health plan set to begin July 1, 2026.
Chairman Randy Dunbar presided over the session attended by supervisors Dean Robins and Brian Sorensen, Auditor Jessica Graves and Assistant Engineer Corey Eckels. The meeting opened at 9:00 a.m.; the board approved the meeting agenda on a motion from Brian Sorensen, seconded by Dean Robins.
The board adopted Resolution 26-072 declaring the county-sponsored bridge replacement project FM-C020(130)--55-20 to be in Clarke County’s interest and awarding the construction contract to Vogel Traffic Service, Inc. for $75,243.47. The resolution also designates County Engineer Justin L. Savage to execute the contract documents after the county receives the contractor’s bond and certificate of insurance.
The supervisors next approved Resolution 26-073, granting a variance application for Roger and Ranetta Mills in Section 35 of Ward Township. The approval is conditional on a written agreement acknowledging that the road is designated Level B, that Clarke County Secondary Roads will not provide rock applications, and that the county will not upgrade the road beyond its current designation. The motion to approve that variance was made by Brian Sorensen and seconded by Dean Robins; the vote was recorded as Ayes: Randy Dunbar, Dean Robins and Brian Sorensen.
Resolution 26-074 was approved to appoint Gregg Silvers to the Clarke County Veteran Affairs Commission to complete the term of Craig Mateer through May 31, 2028. The board approved Resolution 26-075 to contract with the Iowa Governmental Health Care Plan to provide employee benefits to county employees beginning July 1, 2026. Both votes were moved and seconded by supervisors as recorded and passed unanimously.
The meeting closed with Resolution 26-076, approving payment of claims submitted from April 28 through May 4, 2026; the agenda included fund totals for the General Basic Fund ($3,894.37), Rural Services Basic Fund ($4,749.10), Secondary Road Fund ($11,298.37) and Emergency Management Fund ($1,400.00). Brian Sorensen moved to adjourn, Dean Robins seconded, and the board adjourned at 9:36 a.m.
