At its May 11 meeting the Montgomery County Advisory Commission on Policing’s compliance subcommittee reported receiving a letter from State’s Attorney McCarthy asserting that 77% of guns recovered in 2025 in the county "came ... from cars as a result of consent searches" (quoted from the letter). The subcommittee said it will seek additional context and follow-up information from the state’s attorney’s office.
Eva Quitman, vice chair, read the letter and identified the 77% figure as the subcommittee’s reason to request further explanation. Commissioners warned the single-percentage figure lacked necessary context.
