Elmore County Commission honors student champions, proclaims Foster Parent Appreciation Month and approves local appointments

The Elmore County Commission paused regular business on May 11 to honor local student achievements, present proclamations and approve a series of routine administrative items, including a small community grant and a board appointment.
Chair presented resolutions recognizing Edgewood Academy state champions — Barrett Brown (girls discus, four consecutive AISA titles, set a state record at 127 feet, 3 inches) and Jacob Anthony (boys high jump, 6 feet 2 inches) — and the Edgewood JV boys track and field team for winning the AISA JV state title. Edgewood coach Jared Stoffer thanked the commission for the recognition and described a season marked by injuries and strong JV contributions. "It was a really, really successful season," Stoffer said.
The commission also recognized Stanhope Elmore High School JROTC teams. Sergeant Kinley and cadets (including Maria Escobar, outgoing battalion commander; Aden Sowell, outgoing command sergeant major; Garrett Otwell, incoming robotics commander; and Emmanuel Peralta, incoming battalion executive officer) described state finishes in drill, Raider competitions and robotics, and noted participation at the VEX world championship in April 2026.
Stacy Reed, executive director of the Elmore County Department of Human Resources, read a proclamation designating May 2026 as Foster Parent Appreciation Month and thanked foster families for providing stability and care for children in crisis; the commission presented the proclamation and signed it.
On administrative business the commission approved: appointing Angela Crenshaw to the Crenshaw Park board (one listed candidate), authorizing a $2,500 America250 Alabama semi‑quincentennial community grant for Tumka Museum events (funds to be used for entertainment at a June 27 event at the Wetumpka Civic Center), and setting a public hearing for a special events retail alcohol license application from JROK Incorporated for the Black Jacket Symphony event at Lake Martin Amphitheater on June 6–7, 2026. The commission also approved routine consent‑docket items and personnel notifications.
What happens next: organizers and grantees will receive the signed proclamations and grant paperwork; staff will advertise the public hearing for the Black Jacket Symphony license per state law and follow up on the Crenshaw Park appointment paperwork.
