Rockwood highlights 25th consecutive ASBO budget award, staff recognition and student vocational success

The Rockwood Board of Education opened its meeting by celebrating the district—s 2024 meritorious budget award from the Association of School Business Officials, the superintendent said, marking the 25th consecutive year the district has received the MBA recognition. "I would like to congratulate our Chief Financial Officer Cindy Bias and our Director of Finance Dan Steinberg and their entire team for earning this honor yet again," the superintendent said.
Board members also announced nominations are open through Friday, Oct. 25 for the district—s Cornerstone Awards, which recognize support staff including bus drivers, nurses, secretaries, custodians, computer support personnel, classroom assistants and Special School District teachers. Staff asked community members to submit nominations via the district contact referenced during remarks.
As part of the superintendent—s report, trustees heard from Lafayette High School vocational-skills program participants. Student Sam Hillenbrand described his experience in the district—s VSSP at Lafayette: "I work in the kitchen I make salads I help serve food I clean I prep and I cut everything I do the vegetables I do sometimes fruit and yeah I help out with the preschool too ... it's really awesome I help them read ... it's very very rewarding that I actually get to be in a job and actually like get to do something," Hillenbrand said. The board applauded the student presentation.
The superintendent added she and district staff visited the Lafayette VSSP and noted that "a couple people have been hired from the program," calling the initiative a potential model for other districts.
The board approved routine agenda items including the meeting agenda, previous minutes and the consent agenda, which staff said included donations from the Eureka Sports Association (equipment for Eureka-area schools) and the Eureka Elementary PTO (support for school events). The consent agenda motion carried.
