Dundy County appoints Ryan King as sheriff and approves patrol vehicle purchase

The Dundy County Board of Commissioners removed the interim label and appointed Ryan King as Dundy County Sheriff and approved a vehicle purchase for the sheriff’s office out of the current budget year.

Ryan King had served as interim sheriff while seeking local housing and working on residency logistics; the board recorded discussions about the timing of his move and asked for final residency documentation in earlier meetings. At the May 6 meeting the board noted King had access to a residence and agreed to readdress final appointment at a later date.

At the June 3 meeting King presented a budget breakdown showing a substantial portion of his current-year budget unspent and requested permission to purchase a patrol vehicle now to avoid buying two vehicles next year. The board approved the bid from Deveny Ford for a 2024 Dodge Ram for $43,053.00. On June 3 the board also voted to remove King’s interim status and appoint him sheriff; the motion passed unanimously.

Other sheriff-office updates recorded in meeting minutes included body-camera procurement discussions (Axon shipment issues and exploration of Motorola options), interlocal agreements for law enforcement services with the City of Benkelman, and transport/forensics logistics following the announced retirement of a regional forensic pathologist.
