Commission OKs Bradberry-style carriage doors for 40 West Fountain, sets design conditions

Rob and Karen Weber presented plans to replace four aging garage doors at 40 West Fountain with insulated metal carriage-style doors to improve clearance and retain historic appearance. Rob Weber said the existing transom and low door height make it difficult to fit their car; the proposal includes removing the transom and installing taller lift-up doors.

Commissioners reviewed door examples in the applicant’s packet and recommended a consistent carriage-door design across the bays. Several commissioners favored the Bradberry-style carriage door with three square lights (identified in the packet as BPB 106) and suggested using faux hinges and magnetic handles to replicate historic hardware. Commissioners also recommended appropriate exterior lighting—such as gooseneck fixtures—to conceal existing junction boxes and to illuminate entries without creating glare.

Applicants said the new doors will be metal-clad and painted to match the house. Staff and commissioners discussed historic proportions and window-light arrangements; one commissioner noted that three-light, three-panel arrangements were common in the 1920s. The commission moved to approve the door replacement with the condition that the Bradberry-style carriage doors (BPB 106) with three square lights be used consistently across the bays and that finishes and lighting be chosen to preserve historic character. The motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote.

The applicants were thanked for working with staff and commissioners on design details; staff will include the conditions in the permit documentation.
