Deerfield authorizes interconnection for wastewater‑plant solar field expected to offset ~20% of energy use

The Village Board voted Feb. 2 to authorize execution of an interconnection agreement allowing a two‑acre solar installation at the Hackberry Road wastewater treatment plant to connect to Commonwealth Edison.
Robert explained the solar array — constructed under contract with Verigy and subcontractors — sits on a two‑acre parcel at the village wastewater site and will feed energy to the grid to offset the plant’s consumption. "It’s going to offset approximately 20% of that power consumption at the plant," Robert said. He said the electrical contractor and Commonwealth Edison planned to perform the final cutover on Feb. 17.
The agreement reviewed by village attorneys does not require additional payments by the village but does require maintenance while the array is in place and assigns liability for damage to ComEd facilities if the village connection causes harm. Robert said the construction contract includes a performance guarantee and staff will add generation reporting to the annual report; Mayor Shapiro requested reporting every six months or annually so the board can track generation and savings.
Trustees approved the resolution authorizing the interconnection and asked staff to return with periodic performance updates.
