Sayreville board hears curriculum pilot and asks community input as administrators outline $8+ million in potential budget cuts

Superintendent Dr. Lavy said the district has worked to balance revenues and expenditures and that “we cut over $8 million” during the internal budget‑development process.
The curriculum and instruction team asked the board to pilot Reveal Math for K–8 and high‑school algebra/geometry and requested $31,526.17 to purchase print and digital materials for a 16‑class pilot across the district. “We have three very large projects that it is time for us to look at — our math materials, ESL core materials and Spanish curriculum — and the math pilot will impact a majority of our students,” said Miss Gman, the district curriculum supervisor, in the presentation describing a proposed jump in curriculum appropriations from about $1.3 million to $1.8 million (a roughly 40% increase).
Officials also recommended an on‑demand tutoring contract with Imagine Learning for $25,000 to provide 24/7 tutoring access to students in grades 6–12 from Feb. 1 through June 30, 2026. The high‑school presentation noted continued emphasis on mathematics achievement and a target to raise 11th‑grade proficiency toward a 70% goal after achieving a 66% passing rate in 2024–25.
Presenters emphasized that some previously funded programs could be restored if the district receives additional state aid: administrators said they will highlight priorities to bring back should revenues improve. Several board members pressed for implementation details and counts for pilot sections; district staff said the Reveal Math pilot will cover 16 classes spanning K–8 and selective high‑school algebra/geometry sections.
The board was reminded of the budget calendar: a tentative 2026–27 budget is planned for board approval on March 17, after state aid figures are finalized. The meeting packet included related agenda items requesting approval of the pilot purchase and the tutoring contract; those procurements were presented to the board for action.
