Board holds first reading of school resource officer policy, stresses training and limited disciplinary role

The board advanced the first of three readings for a school resource officer policy that sets training requirements and states SROs are to be used primarily for safety, not routine student discipline.
The Red Lake Public School District board held the first of three readings on Aug. 2 for a policy that would define the role, duties and training requirements for school resource officers (SROs).
Chair Mike Barett described the draft policy as clarifying contractual duties of SROs and establishing training expectations. "The policy establishes contractual duties and training requirements of the school resource officer and ... SROs are not to be used for discipline unless there's a safety issue," Barrett said, adding that the intent is to use SROs for safety interventions rather than routine disciplinary matters.
Barrett said district SROs had attended state SRO training and that he is participating in a national SRO organization committee that will provide additional resources and best practices. He noted the policy will return for a second reading in September and a final vote in October.
Board members did not take a final vote at the meeting; the policy will be discussed in subsequent meetings as part of the required multi-reading adoption process.
