Agency official celebrates opening of shared-use path to Innovation Station Metro

An agency official celebrated the opening of a new shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path at the Innovation Station kiss-and-ride lot, saying the route connects several Herndon-area neighborhoods to the Innovation Station and Herndon Innovation Center Metro station.

The official said the project began after a years-long study to improve access to the Metro and that community members were heavily involved in planning and implementation. “These projects don't happen without communities or without community engagement,” the agency official said, thanking neighbors for their input and urging applause for the community's role.

“We used to have to go all the way around to get to the Innovation Station Metro,” the official said, describing how residents off Parcher Avenue and nearby apartment complexes now have direct, safer access. “This project is a game changer for this community,” the presenter added, calling the new path “seamless, safe and convenient pedestrian and bicycle access” to the kiss-and-ride station.

Speakers also framed the project in environmental and economic terms, saying it provides transportation options that can reduce car trips and help households facing high transportation costs. “Giving people options outside of just getting in their cars is so important,” the agency official said, noting both environmental benefits and lower transportation costs for residents.
