NHSN demonstrates data‑set generation, SIR reports and export/custom report features

NHSN Acute Care Analytics staff demonstrated how to generate analysis data sets (DSG), run five report types including SIR reports, modify and save custom reports, and export results from the OPC application.
Ben O'Connell of NHSN's Acute Care Analytics team demonstrated NHSN's analysis workflow and report tools. He said the first step for any analytic work is to generate analysis data sets (DSG), which collect procedures, events and summaries into the data used for reporting. Ben advised generating DSG each time analytic work begins so the latest data are included.
Ben described five report types available in the application: line listing (detailed records), frequency tables (counts and percentages), bar charts (side-by-side comparisons), pie charts (proportions), and SIR reports. He explained the standardized infection ratio (SIR) as a facility’s number of reported healthcare‑associated infections divided by the number predicted by the model: "If your SIR is below 1, you've reported fewer HAIs than the model predicted, but if your SIR is above 1, there might be some things to improve upon." Ben cautioned reporters to consider p-values and confidence intervals when interpreting SIRs; in his example the model predicted 13 infections and 14 were reported, with p≈0.75 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.613 to 1.763, indicating the observed difference was not statistically significant.
He showed how to access the Analysis tab, generate DSG (the example last-run date shown was November 2024), select and modify reports, apply filters (for example, filter where procedure code = KPRO), reorder display and sort variables, run the report and save it as a custom report for future reuse. Ben also demonstrated exporting reports (five supported formats) and noted that saved modifications are preserved in exported files (example exported a line listing to Microsoft Excel).
For troubleshooting, he suggested using the "Clear data sets and processing" link if DSG gets stuck and said DSG progress is shown by a status circle; users need not stay on the page while DSG runs. He closed by pointing attendees to supplemental training materials and advising questions be posted in ServiceNow or emailed to nhsn@cdc.gov.
