Task force explores workforce-housing options; consultants outline two development pathways

Trustees and staff updated the board on Oct. 24 about ongoing work by the district’s educator-housing task force, which is evaluating options to provide workforce housing for district employees.
Task-force members met with legal counsel and development consultants who walked the group through two primary pathways: (A) develop housing on district-owned property and (B) acquire and retrofit or build on an external property. Consultants outlined regulatory, financing and operational trade-offs associated with each pathway and emphasized the need for detailed site analysis, geotechnical studies and community-engagement planning.
Participants discussed design considerations — including amenities, unit typologies and features that would serve staff — and the need to balance housing goals with site constraints and costs. Trustee comments stressed the importance of centering employee needs in any eventual design and of producing clear communications for the public when recommending next steps.
Staff said the task force will draft a substantive memo for the board that maps potential near-term actions (site surveys, geotechnical work and preliminary design) and longer-term steps tied to funding pathways and public engagement. Board members were told that the final recommendation will be brought back for public debate and vote, and that additional trustee(s) who join the board before a final vote will receive the full task-force record.
