Open-ditch cleanouts near completion; residents report backups that may need county highway work

Staff provided updates on several open-ditch cleanout projects and reported they are approaching completion.
"Zach's been in contact with the contractor," a board member said before turning updates over to Zach. Zach told the board the Little Potato Creek cleanout, performed by Extreme Excavating, is "pretty much completely done" and Brush Creek likewise needs only a couple of tile outlets replaced. He named Johnson's LLC, Amos/Paris/Floyd, Sims Rogers and Pelling as contractors finishing spoil spreading and indicated remaining work should be done within one to two weeks.
Board members raised resident complaints. One property owner, Terry Hillis in Michigan Town, reported backups into a basement. The board confirmed they have assigned a contractor and arranged for the county highway department's jet truck to assist; however, board members also clarified jurisdictional limits.
"The drainage board cannot build the drain," a board member said, noting that building a new drain would be a county highway function or require action by the board of commissioners; after those actions, the drainage board could accept a legal drain.
Staff will follow up on the assigned contractors’ timelines and coordinate with county highway for equipment support where appropriate.
