Canton Township board approves administration building reconstruction, ASR road repairs, budget reallocation and Liberty Fest fireworks permit

The board also awarded a contract for the first phase of repairs to local concrete roads affected by ASR, intended to repair or replace pavement in five subdivisions.
Hudak said the board approved purchase of a new burner assembly for one administration-building boiler to extend the unit's service life and improve energy efficiency; he did not provide a purchase price. The board also approved reallocating existing budget dollars to meet a required local match for a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers drainage assessment following a recent flood. Hudak said the Corps is requiring a 50% match on a project the township expects will cost $300,000 in total, making the township's share about $150,000; he said the match can include in-kind services such as surveys, volunteer time or contractor work to avoid additional cash outflow.
The trustees approved the permit for the 2024 Liberty Fest fireworks display, scheduled for Friday, June 14, 2024. The board also adopted the Canton Fire Department's five-year strategic plan, which Hudak said was developed with input from residents, community members and department leadership and identifies departmental needs and objectives for the next five years.
Hudak opened the summary by noting the meeting began with recognition of two Canton firefighter cadets, Ian Fox and Nathan pin, who are enrolled at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park and the Schoolcraft Fire Academy; he said the cadet program "is designed to help ensure the availability of competent, well-trained individuals to be considered for future fire department vacancies."
