Board approves $85,000 demolition contract and temporary power for visitor-side bleachers at Ambridge High School

The Ambridge Area School District board approved a demolition contract and a temporary-power proposal for the removal of the visitor-side bleachers at the high school on Aug. 13.

Mrs. Speronio presented three related building-and-grounds items: ratification of a $14,950 purchase for a new high-school cafeteria boiler; approval of an $85,000 demolition agreement with Tom Cypes Demolition for removal, disposal and grading of the visitor-side bleacher area (including the underlying concrete pad); and a $4,289 proposal from Yates Electric to provide temporary power for stadium lights during demolition.

During discussion board members and administrators pressed for clarity on scope and contingency: contractors said the $85,000 quote covered removal of the bleachers and the concrete pad and could be expanded to include nearby ancillary structures for the same price, although solicitors and staff recommended soliciting additional quotes and confirming permitting as prudent procurement practice.

Concerns and logistical questions were aired about access for booster clubs (the quarterback club), potential damage to a nearby concession building, generator rental costs (estimated $2,500–$3,000 per month), and the status of bathrooms and utilities beneath the structure. Administrators said they had contacted booster-leadership representatives and would continue stakeholder outreach; the district will place an item on next week’s agenda specifically addressing whether to take down ancillary structures.

The board voted to approve the items with the solicitor’s finalization clause included in the motion; the motion carried. Mr. Zaji registered a 'no' on item one but voted yes on items two and three; the motion carried overall.
