Berkeley issues proclamations marking Jewish American Heritage, Affordable Housing Month and Eid observances

Mayor Adina Ishii opened the May 12 meeting of the Berkeley City Council with a land acknowledgement and presented three ceremonial proclamations recognizing Jewish American Heritage Month, Affordable Housing Month and the observance of Eid al‑Fitr and Eid al‑Adha.

Robin Mencher, director of Jewish Family and Community Services East Bay, accepted the Jewish American Heritage Month proclamation and praised the agency’s nearly 150‑year history of serving the East Bay. "Our work touches all aspects of our community," Mencher said, describing services for immigrants, refugees and older residents.

The council declared May 2026 Affordable Housing Month. Tracy Matthews, a Berkeley resident and member of the East Bay Housing Organization, accepted the proclamation on EBHO’s behalf and outlined the group’s regional outreach: "Our programming this year includes a great lineup of events, community celebrations, days of action, panel discussions, housing workshops, community trainings, and more," Matthews said, urging local engagement amid state and federal funding challenges.

The council also recognized Eid al‑Fitr and Eid al‑Adha. Sofia Sheikh, a UC Berkeley senior speaking on behalf of a student who drafted the proclamation, said formal recognition provides visibility for Muslim students and residents and helps ensure accommodations for those observing the holidays.

All three proclamations were adopted and received without objection. Council members and community presenters said the proclamations are intended to spotlight community contributions and encourage public participation in upcoming events and programs.
