The Columbia City Board of Works and Safety on Feb. 24 tabled an encroachment request for 782 W. Business 30 and directed staff to inspect the site and report back at the next meeting.
Max and Jane Goldwood appeared before the board and said they wanted to encroach into a setback at the rear of the property. “Max and Jane Goldwood 6120 North 50 West Columbia City, Indiana,” they told the board when asked to state their names and address. They described wanting to “encroach in the … back of the property” to accommodate building siting and site features.
City staff raised concerns about underground utilities and sewer easements. Kelly told the board staff needed to locate the centerline and verify clearance for transformers, sewer lines and other utilities before any approval. Kelly said the site was still snow-covered when the Goldwoods first raised the request and recommended an on-site review to avoid building over sewer infrastructure.
A member of the board moved to table the item and asked Kelly to meet the property owners on site within two weeks to confirm easement and utility locations. “I’ll make a motion that we table to the next meeting and in the interim for you guys or Kelly or whoever to tell us kind of …” the board member said, and the motion carried.
What happens next: Staff will inspect the rear property line and utility easements, then return with findings at the board’s next meeting. If the site is clear of conflicts, the board indicated it would consider the encroachment request then; if not, applicants may need to revise plans or pursue a formal easement modification.
Provenance: Discussion begins at SEG 016 and continues through SEG 121.
