HCTC students win 50 state medals; nine will compete at nationals

Hancock County Technical Center director Bill Tracy and advisers Tara Mason and Alan Smith presented district recognition for student achievements at the state SkillsUSA competition, reporting 50 medals across several programs and announcing nine students who will advance to the national competition in early June.
"The medal not only represents the students' hard work... but also represents the amount of work that our instructors really pour into them," Bill Tracy said, introducing advisers and students. Advisers noted the school earned a chapter-of-excellence recognition and that the program is largely student-driven.
Several students spoke from the podium about their events and medals. Ryan Gross, a senior at Ellsworth High School in the criminal-justice program, said, "I competed in the criminal justice quiz bowl and I also brought home the gold." The board applauded the students and wished those headed to nationals success.
Ending: The board publicly recognized HCTC students' results and will support travel plans for the nine students advancing to nationals.
