Library sprinkler activation caused limited damage; borough awaiting insurance verification

Borough staff reported that on Feb. 8 a sprinkler head at the Guthrie Memorial Library activated after frozen water in a 90° bend in the system put pressure on the head. The activation led to water discharge affecting stacks and programs; staff estimate roughly 100 books were damaged and about 16 events were canceled.
Officials credited rapid response: an on-duty officer heard the alarm, fire personnel arrived within minutes, public works and library staff moved materials and a mitigation company was on scene within about 45 minutes. Staff said the sprinkler activation likely resulted from freezing conditions in a specific riser bend, which in turn allowed two or three additional heads to leak (but not fully activate).
Mitigation work is nearly complete and the library has opened a limited lobby service so patrons can still check out items. Full reopening and restoration depend on the insurance company's inspection and approval of repairs; staff expect to provide a further update when insurance verification is complete.
During public comment, residents asked whether HVAC conditions contributed to the freeze, whether grant reporting for an HVAC grant (Act 61 of 2011) is up to date, and whether computers or other equipment were damaged. Borough staff said reports and grant filings are being made and invited follow-up in person to answer outstanding questions.
