Board members raised concerns about competitive balance, scholarship implications and whether a rule written for hockey could be extended to other sports such as flag football, bowling or wrestling. Several members said a one‑year experimental approach with a clear review and grandfathering language could limit unintended consequences; the superintendent confirmed the district could structure interdistrict agreements to provide year‑to‑year authorization or longer grandfathering for a particular student.
"I want to make sure I understand what I've been told — it's a decision that gets made by the superintendent each and every time," one board member said during the discussion, urging a review of outcomes before automatic renewals. The board also emphasized the need for procedures that ensure no harm to resident students or the district’s programs.
On the vote the roll call was recorded as yes by Miss Nachek, Mr. Griffin, Mr. Miko, Mrs. Ham and Mr. Bissell; the motion carried.
The policy change takes effect under the superintendent’s administrative implementation; board members said they expect to monitor any approvals and will revisit policy language if the statewide legislative landscape or local experience warrants additional limits or clarifications.
