The Hazel Park Board of Education approved the purchase of three electric buses under a grant not to exceed $1,620,000, voting April 6 to move forward while the district continues infrastructure planning.
Administrators said the district reduced its request from four buses to three and will use remaining grant funds for charging infrastructure. They warned that charger specifications depend on the chosen bus model, so the district must select the bus vendor before finalizing chargers and electrical work. The administration said DTE will assist with planning and that a district‑designated mechanical engineer has begun preliminary drawings.
Board members asked about ordering deadlines and per‑bus costs; administrators said the order timing pushed delivery into the following year and that the ordering deadline has been extended to October 2027. One presenter estimated a per‑bus cost of about $420,000 but said a final amount would be provided when the district places the order.
The board approved the purchase by roll call. Administrators said they will return with vendor and charger details for final approvals and coordination with DTE.
