Council members on the Town of Sunset Beach accepted the resignation of Councilman Lurin at a special meeting on May 14, 2025, after he told the council he must step down because of a serious family medical situation that requires his full attention.
Lurin read the resignation at the dais and told colleagues he could not complete the remaining two years of his four-year term. "As of this evening, I must resign my elected position here on town council," he said, and urged residents interested in serving to run for the seat.
Council moved and seconded a motion to accept Lurin's resignation. The council also directed town staff to advertise the interim vacancy, invite interested residents to email the town administrator with a resume, and place a discussion of appointment on the June 2 agenda. The interim appointment was described as running until the new council is sworn in December 2025.
Mayor (role title) presided over the vote and the council recorded the motion as carried. Council members who participated in the conflict-of-interest check earlier in the meeting stated they had none regarding agenda items.
The resignation and the interim-appointment process will be reflected in the minutes and in an online notice the town said it would publish to solicit applicants.
Next steps: applications will be accepted through the process described; council will consider making an appointment at its June 2 meeting.
