The Lowell City Council proclaimed May 12, 2026, "Holbrook Lady Lions Day" to honor Holbrook Middle School's girls basketball team for five consecutive Gaston County championships and an extended winning streak.
Mayor Pro Tem Bates read Proclamation 03/2026, noting the team's county championships and a cited 61-game winning streak. Principal Winston and Coach Nichols thanked the council; Winston said players were strong both academically and athletically, and Coach Nichols described the team as leaders who consistently came to practice eager to improve.
Council presented a plaque and a flag and invited the team and families to accept the recognition. The mayor and others credited local organizers including Nikisha Franklin and Travis Smith for coordinating the event.
Later in the meeting, Mayor Larry Simons told the council he will undergo emergency eye surgery and expected to be out about three months. He asked Mayor Pro Tem Bates to take over memorial service duties and other responsibilities in his absence and said he may return by the August or September meeting.
The council accepted the Holbrook proclamation unanimously. No formal city policy was changed in the presentation; the recognition was ceremonial and accompanied by a flag and plaque presentation.
