Anthony (Tony) Mendes was presented a certificate of promotion to the rank of lieutenant. The board noted Mendes is a Hope Mills native and a 2004 Jack Britt High School graduate who began with the Hope Mills Police Department in 2007. Mendes has served in community and traffic policing, worked as a detective, and was cross-designated with a federal task force.
Derek Roland was presented a certificate of promotion to the rank of captain. Officials noted Roland began his law enforcement career in 2004 with the Spring Lake Police Department, joined Hope Mills in 2009, served in community policing and patrol, and was promoted through the sergeant and lieutenant ranks before receiving the captaincy.
"These two represent the finest of our police department," a town official said at the ceremony, praising their years of service and community involvement. The promotions were ceremonial presentations during the meeting; no further board action on the promotions was recorded in the public session.
